Directions: Amy Sillman: Third Person Singular
Washington, DC
As part of the Directions series, works by New York-based painter Amy Sillman are on view. Her paintings are intimate, psychological, and full of humor and pathos. She takes up anything perceived to be a predicament in painting with headstrong determination and instinctual insight. Sillman's new works embrace abstraction without abandoning representation. She begins with depictions of figures in relationship to one another, but the resulting painting space is notably sculptural, as Sillman builds bold, overlapping sections in bright colors and continuously rearranges them. Allowing her spaces to unfold over time, the final painting is the result of numerous layers and a continuous reworking and covering over of sections.
