Black women have made significant contributions to the United States and the world for more than three centuries. This exhibit recognizes black women whose accomplishments have changed our lives between 1700 and 1977. Their stories are organized by areas of achievement, including literature, medicine, civil rights, education, law, business and industry, fine arts, performing arts, government, and the military. The women range from world-famous to little-known, from poet Phillis Wheatley and Washington, DC-based educator Nannie Helen Burroughs to sculptor Edmonia Lewis and business executive Eartha M.M. White.
